We made the decision that we did not want to ever go through anything like that again. Though born and raised on the south shore, it was time to move. We wanted somewhere close, yet far enough north to be safe. Even for a realtor, it was not easy to search for a house in the weeks immediately after the storm, especially from so far away. However, we were very blessed and lucky to find a wonderful house in Walker, at a fair price. Walker is in Livingston Parish, about halfway between Hammond and Baton Rouge.
Our wish had been to find a place with high ground, good schools, and good people. Livingston Parish has fulfilled all that, and more. It is truly home now, yet is only a little over an hour from friends and family still in the New Orleans area.
Among the items we brought with us when we evacuated were our computers. We were able to stay informed, search for a house, and answer questions from others who were in the same situation as us. Several of the people we met online later became clients and friends, as we helped them also find new houses across southeastern Louisiana.
To this day we are still assisting people displaced by Katrina. Housing and financing problems are still lingering, even after 3 years. And now, Gustav is upon us.
We created GustavHelp.com as a way to share information about those agencies and organizations which provided fast and effective help to our family when we needed it most. We have not tried to make it the site with the most links, nor with every aspect of storm preparedness, etc. We wanted to keep it simple and effective, so that others can hopefully get relief from Gustav as we did from Katrina, and get a head start on their full recovery.
